Gardens & Farms on the Mekong

Get back to nature on this off-the-beaten-path tour experience in Luang Prabang. Wander through Laos’ very first botanical garden, enjoy an authentic Lao village lunch hosted by a local, and continue your nature immersion with an Agro-Ecological Tour at an organic and sustainable farm that promotes sustainable farming methods.

Your tour departs from the city of Luang Prabang where an English-speaking tour guide, a traditional Lao slow boat and its captain will be waiting to take you on a journey to discover pockets of natural oases along the Mekong river. You first stop is Pha Tad Ke, the very first botanical garden in Laos. This lush garden showcases Laos’ indigenous flora such as various species of gingers, orchids, ferns, bamboos and palms, around the base of the stunning Pha Tad Ke cliff towering over the Mekong river. The highlight of Pha Tad Ke is its series of ethno-botanic gardens that demonstrate the relationship between Laotian natives and the natural plant world, featuring crops used in medicine, handicraft and spiritual ceremonies.

After a morning strolling around lush forests in total tranquillity, you’ll depart to the local village of Ban Saleuan for an authentic Lao lunch. In Ban Saleuan, you will be hosted by Ms. Phai, a local Lao lady who is an experienced cook and offers her guests only the warmest Lao hospitality. Sit back, relax, and savour an authentic village lunch prepared with only the freshest natural local ingredients. If time permits, you have the option of taking a trek to explore the Ban Saleuan Caves.

Once you’ve filled your bellies and recharged a little, we continue upriver to Mekong Eden Farm. Secluded and accessible only by boat, Mekong Eden Farm is a sustainable organic farm focusing on promoting ecological farming models and agro-ecology education to achieve sustainability within local communities. You’ll be joining an Agro-Ecological tour where you get to learn how they create sustainable food ecosystems and the different farming techniques they use. After this educational afternoon around Mekong Eden Farm, we begin our 1-hour cruise back to Luang Prabang.

Bounmi works with a select number of exceptional locals to provide you with a variety of authentic Luang Prabang tour experiences. We develop close relationships with the people we work with and are excited to be able to expand on the types of authentic local experiences we offer to visitors.
