THE LIFELINE OF LAOS

The Mekong river, or “Mae” Nam Khong (“Mother” of Water) as the locals call it, runs over 4300km from the Tibetan Plateau through China, Myanmar, Laos, Thailand, Cambodia, and Vietnam. It not only serves as a geographical border but also forms an essential artery supplying water, food sources, livelihoods, and transportation. The Mekong’s history is as rich, deep, and colorful as the river is long. Culturally and spiritually, Mae Nam Khong prevails in the hearts of Lao people and is celebrated through cultural festivals, folklore, traditional dance, and handcrafted textiles. Often identified with the highly revered and equally feared Naga. Serpent-like creatures believed by locals to exist between the human world and the netherworld and live in the Mekong.
